PENNYROYAL HERB cut Mentha pulegium
Wild
Morocco
Avoid during pregnancy.
The leaf contains 1.0-2.0% essential oil consisting of 80.0-94.0% pulegone, a severe liver toxin when administered to rats in high dose.
The notoriety of pennyroyal is due to the misuse of the essential oil.
Death has been reported after consumption of as little as 15.0 ml (1/2 oz) of the oil, and in one instance, following consumption of an alcohol extract of pennyroyal herb over a two week period.
The last case involved a woman who was determined postmortem to have had an ectopic pregnancy, and toxic pulegone metabolites were reported to be present in the liver.
