Herb News

I heard the doctor on the TV today say he "googled" Milk Thistle and couldn't find any scientific studies upholding the efficacy of the herb. At that exact moment I was looking at huge list of studies regarding the various positive effects of Milk Thistle. I, too, had "googled" Milk Thistle. What's going on here? The doctor instead concentrated on a study which "proved" that Milk Thistle did not have a positive effect on diabetes. The only problem with that is we have seen other studies which show the opposite. [See: Herbal Support for Diabetes] What's going on here? What a shame if someone hears the doctor's careless words and disregards the long-known, well-studied and decidedly positive effects Milk Thistle has on the liver. I think what's going on here is this: the TV doctor is of the "We gotta find a pill to cure this and you gotta get the pill from ME!" mentality. He doesn't even comprehend the concept of herbal support for a holistic approach to wellness. He makes his money from disease, not wellness. We, on the other hand, care not what his studies say about the effects of one particular chemical constituent or single herb on "disease." We know it just doesn't work that way. I think what I learned today is that I've got to quit watching the TV doctor. It isn't good for my blood pressure. -Jeff

Aromatherapy News

Word comes today of an article by Shellie Enteen, South Carolina Director of NAHA (National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy) at MassageToday.com. The article, on aromatherapy safety, underscores the educational mission of NAHA and the importance of NAHA in furthering this mission over the years. Ten years ago, NAHA held its first International Aromatherapy Conference and Trade Show in San Francisco. Cheryl's Herbs was a vendor at that trade show, a big leap for us at that time.  Jeff took part in a panel discussion presentation on the business of aromatherapy and Cheryl was presented to the membership as its first internationally elected president. We are pleased to see the organization prospers still and the mission endures. Kudos to Shellie and to NAHA!

Nature imitates art.

The eggplant grew wild in India and was first cultivated in China in the 5th century B.C. This one was grown at Red

In addition to having the ability to grow in oddly fascinating shapes, eggplant is a very good source of dietary fiber, potassium, manganese, copper and thiamin (vitamin B1), vitamin B6, folate, magnesium and niacin.

Eggplant also contains important phytonutrients, many which have antioxidant activity. Phytonutrients contained in eggplant include phenolic compounds, such as caffeic and chlorogenic acid, and flavonoids, such as nasunin.

Chlorogenic acid is one of the most potent free radical scavengers found in plant tissues. Benefits attributed to chlorogenic acid include antimutagenic (anti-cancer), antimicrobial, anti-LDL (bad cholesterol) and antiviral activities.

Nasunin is a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger that has been shown to protect cell membranes from damage.

Embrace the eggplant!

Summer Suggestions:

Our cooling, refreshing Catnip Summer Spray is a big hit these days. Did you know that studies have shown Catnip Essential Oil to be 10 times stronger than DEET in repelling mosquitoes? Read Jeff's Article, Catnip as Mosquito Repellent.

To keep cool this summer, Jeff prefers drinking a chilled tea of Peppermint and Guarana. He has also noted that if he drinks lots of Peppermint tea that bugs tend to avoid him.

BENEFITS of ORGANIC NUTRITION

with Dr. Jovan Cakic & Jane Turner

“You are what you eat” is more than a common proverb. The health of your body is a reflection of the quality of food you eat. Organic produce supplies the best possible nourishment for all aspects of life: your body, your mind, and your consciousness. Food grown with artificial chemicals can put a strain on your body and cause poor health. These chemicals are also toxic to the environment, as well as the body.

MS Fundraiser

Our National Multiple Sclerosis Society Fundraiser held on May 21 was a big hit. Nearly $500 was  raised for the National MS Society.

It was easy to catch the spirit of the passion of the Curesaders  at the event. Last year 186 walkers raised $586,000 for MS research and services for those in need. Each walker must raise a minimum of $1500 to be eligible to participate in the 50 mile, 3 day Challenge Walk for MS. This group of walkers organized into a group, called themselves the Curesaders, to help each other in a group effort raise enough money to ensure that all would be eligible to participate in the walk.

Marypat Ehlmann was the winner of the deluxe herb basket raffle prize worth over $100. Congratulations!

Yes there were door prizes given away every half hour, culminating in the drawing for the grand prize, free massages by Tracy Campbell, individual aromatherapy sessions with Cheryl and magnetic rollouts by Cheryl's mom, however, the single most popular spot all day was near the food table which was blazing with every imaginable color.

Cheryl is always encouraging customers to eat more vegetables to assist them reach their health goals.

A variety of bright deeply, colored vegetables and fruits are the best for maintaining good health and the refreshment table was a good example of that kind of variety.

The fruits & vegetables were purchased from the Maplewood Farmers Market and the Natural Way in Webster.

There was also whole wheat crackers with hummus and salmon salad, baked potato chips and yogurt dip.

For desert there was pumpkin bread made from organic pumpkin grown at Red Sage Farm (owned by Jeff & Cheryl's daughter and son-in-law) and chocolate chip treats made by Patti Rosenkranz and very chocolate brownies made by Lucy Schroeder. Jeff is always reminding Cheryl that chocolate is healthy too!

Thanks to all who attended!

Product Spotlight

Rose Geranium Hydrosol

Pelargonium graveolens

Organic, USA

It is timely to highlight our lovely Rose Geranium Hydrosol since Pelargonium graveolens has been named 2006 Herb of the Year. We're not sure who has deemed it so but most everyone seems to agree or at least go along with the idea.

In her article Alternatives to Hormone Replacement Therapy Cheryl says, " I know many ladies who like to spray this refreshing hydrosol on their skin to ease hot flashes. A gentle mist on the face, neck and arms can be refreshing and cooling in almost any situation.

In The News

Recent research at Rutgers University has shown that curry, or more accurately the curcumin, (Tumeric) it contains, is effective in both preventing and treating prostate cancer. As well, the effect is even more pronounced in the presence of phenethyl isothiocyanate found abundantly in cauliflower, kale, cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, watercress and turnips.

This is just the most recent of a series of trials using Tumeric successfully against a variety of different cancers.

Musical Note

If you live in or near New York City, you can hear Jeff perform with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra on the Great American Orchestras Series at Carnegie Hall on April 1. The program includes Brahms German Requiem and John Adams' large work,On the Transmigration of Souls”, written in memory of the victims of 9/11 and premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 2002. Also performing will be the the St. Louis Symphony Chorus and The St. Louis Children's Choir with whom Jeff has performed many times. Cheryl's Herbs E-Newsletter

January 16, 2006

It seems like just yesterday...

Fifteen years ago, in the month of February, we began our business, selling herbs, essential oils and natural body care products. Over the years Cheryl's Herbs has grown as the public has experienced an increased awareness of the power of herbs to promote healing and to be a valuable tool in the prevention of disease.

To celebrate our 15th anniversary, we wish to offer to our loyal newsletter subscribers 15% off all purchases for the next 30 days - either online or in our store.

[You should note that for online orders we charge your credit card when the order is fulfilled. At that time we make adjustments for things like shipping cost for expensive, lightweight items and your newsletter special discount.]

New Class Schedule

We have posted the class schedule for the new year on our Calendar Page. The first class is AROMATHERAPY & DEPRESSION, presented by Marie Temmen, BS N, MA Ed, a Certified Aromatherapist who has many years experience in the psychiatric-mental health field. Tuesday, February 21, 2006 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

New Aromatherapy Certification Course

We are pleased to announce that Cheryl's Herbs will sponsor another 30-hour aromatherapy certification course. The class, Aroma 101: Foundations is offered by The Northwest College of Herbal and Aromatic Studies and will be taught by Marie Temmen BS N, MA Ed., beginning Monday April 10, 2006.

New Distance Learning Aromatherapy Program

For those interested in doing study on an independent basis, the Northwest College of Herbal and Aromatic Studies, through Cheryl's Herbs, provides this opportunity through a new forty-hour course.

New on cherylsherbs.com

Be sure to read Cheryl's new FAQ article on Ginger & Peppermint During Pregnancy.

Comments by Cheryl and extensive information from our website are prominently featured in an extensive article by Karrie Osborne, entitled "Essential Oils Simply Complex", in the December/January issue of Massage and Bodywork Magazine.

In the News

Lowly grapefruit essential oil has received some good press lately. According to our old friend Alan Hirsch of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation of Chicago [you may remember his study which identified several aromas which stimulated sexual arousal in women and failed to identify any aromas which did not stimulate sexual arousal in men!], the aroma of pink grapefruit makes women appear five years younger to men.

Unfortunately however, women did not perceive grapefruit-scented men to be any younger.

Also, researchers in Japan report that rats exposed to the scent of grapefruit gained less weight than those exposed to other scents.

Meanwhile, in a less than scientific observation, Jeff reports that all the positive effects of grapefruit essential oil can be enhanced by the addition of some lime.

Finally, we note that this humble newsletter is still the world's #1 Herbs E-Newsletter and now our online Encyclopedia is the world's #1 Aromatherapy Encyclopedia.

We believe our success is based on the fact that our goal at Cheryl's Herbs is to make it easier and more convenient for you to have a more natural and healthy lifestyle.
